Description

In June 2024, Optimal Group commissioned a Stand-alone Power System (SPS) at a remote iron ore mine site in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The system was designed to supply efficient, low-emission power to a remote bore pump with a total site load of less than 15 kW.

The client needed to power the remote site in a way that was autonomous, sustainable and resilient. Optimal Group responded by delivering a containerised SPS that combined renewable energy with advanced backup technology.

The system included a 65 kW LPG-fuelled microturbine, 102.2 kWh of new energy storage and 26.2 kW of solar PV. A remote monitoring system allows the site operator to oversee performance and maintenance from afar. All major components, except the PV panels and LPG vessel, were housed in a modified 20 ft insulated container with dedicated compartments for the switchroom (plus batteries) and the microturbine.

The project serves as a trial to explore the suitability of microgrids and microturbines as an alternative to diesel generators for small remote loads such as bore pumps. In normal operation, the batteries and solar PV supply enough power to keep the site operational, with the turbine available as a backup generator, called on to support site load and charge the batteries in the event of low solar PV production. The design is also scalable and future-ready, with the option to upgrade to a hydrogen-fuelled microturbine.
